I write, but am I a "Writer"?

I despise the word Amateur.

When I started writing, I often referred to myself as an aspiring author, or an amateur writer.

But it never quite sat well with me. There was a sense of self degradation that came with it, and I would falter, or lose confidence in my own abilities. Often, falling into the trap of wondering whether I could cut it as a Writer.

Doing circles over and over again as to whether I had the right to call myself a Writer, An Author. My confidence was shot every time I sat down to write, and I felt like an imposter.

There are times I still do.

It’s the big question for many. When can I call myself a writer or an Author? Do I need to be published to claim such an auspicious title?

Not only is it a hovering question for many, but there is also a divide among writers as to whether one can call themselves a writer without being traditionally published. What does that mean for indy authors then?

Myself, after years of speaking to others, listening to many different opinions on the matter, I've come to a simple conclusion.

To paraphrase the philosopher, Rene Descartes;

"I write, therefore I am…"

... a writer, that is.

It isn't even a question.

Those that dance, are they not Dancers? Why then is it different for those of us who write?

I’ve recently been overwhelmed with my nine to five and found it difficult to find the time to put pen to paper and write. As a result, I’ve found myself question whether I am a writer at all anymore.

But I do, even if I only take notes, jot ideas.

If you have passion, the desire, you write often, or you consider yourself to be one; then a writer you are. Don’t allow negative thoughts in; flourish, imagine, create. Write.

Let's not torture ourselves over such a simple thing, and if there is a negative Nancy out there that says, "You're not published..."

Your response should always be, "But I write."
